A figure of Neptune holding a trident, standing on two dolphins. On either side is seated a traditionally dressed fishwife with a basket, looking away from the building. Women working in the fish processing trade dressed in many layers of skirts – the number of layers indicating status. Four urns also decorate the pediment and a relief head projects from the apogee of the door beneath Neptune. There is also a highly coloured metal Newcastle coat of arms above the door, which is repeated on doors at either end of the building.
