Portland stone figure of Neptune on a replica pedestal. The statue is identifiable as Neptune with his long hair and beard and the dolphin that was sacred to him in Antiquity. It is magnificently treated and full of movement with its wildly water-drenched hair thrown back and head looking up to the trident which he held in his right hand. His strongly modelled left leg rests on the back of a large dolphin. Drapery is wrapped around his right arm, falls down across his waist and ends entwined with the dolphin’s tail. His left hand rests on the tail of the dolphin. Interestingly the hair under his arms is detailed. The statue has been badly smashed, there are break lines through the right arm and drapery, through the left arm and dolphin's tail, both legs, the toes on his left foot, the dolphin’s snout and an old hole is present at the top of the drapery by his left hand (perhaps suggesting an addition).
