A fluted Corinthian column, supported on a square-sectioned pedestal adorned on all four sides with bronze reliefs, designed by William Railton. The column is surmounted by a slightly tapering cylindrical pedestal, which supports the colossal stone figure of Nelson by Edward Hodges Baily. He is shown in full-dress uniform, wearing his cocked hat and with the insignia of his orders on his chest. The bas-relief panels by are by John Edward Carew (The Death of Nelson), John Ternouth (The Battle of Copenhagen), Musgrave Lewthwaite Watson and William Frederick Woodington (The Battle of St Vincent), cast by Christy, Adams and Hill, and Moore, Fressange and Moore. The lions added in 1867 are by Edwin Landseer, and were cast by Carlo Marochetti.
