An interior scene with 'Mr Crank' seated at his desk. He wears a green coat and breeches with a long, silk waistcoat. Light shines through the window on the left. Paper and quills on the desk, ready for his attention. Chamberlin has created an atmosphere of intimacy and domesticity within the painting, which is reinforced by the presence of the sleeping cat on the chair behind him. Traditionally titled 'The Gentleman in Blue' by hospital staff, the sitter may be the silkman of Bishopsgate Will Cranke (c.1686–1762), who lived at Petersham. He was the grandfather of Theodore and William Hunt, who were both governors at Guy's Hospital. William was a governor for over 25 years and a big supporter, leaving a significant legacy of around £180,000 in his will to Guy's Hospital to build accommodation sufficient for a further 100 patients.
