This double portrait depicts the artist’s mother with her second husband in the drawing room of their house in North London. The composition is based on 'The Arnolfini Betrothal' by Jan van Eyck (National Gallery, London), which contains many symbolic references to marriage and fidelity. Green has devised a contemporary version of this symbolism, by including objects that have deep personal associations for the sitters. The marriage was a happy one and the work contains a series of affirmations of this contentment.
