Stephen Bone was the son of the Glasgow etcher Muirhead Bone. He was a notable wood engraver and in the 1930s illustrated books written by his mother. From 1943 to 1945 he served as an Offical War Artist attached to the Royal Navy, when this painting was made. The last decade of his life was spent as an art critic, broadcaster and author.
