This preparatory design is for a window on the theme of 'Morning' made for the Volkschochschule, near Hamburg. It depicts an old man and a boy reaching towards the rising sun. When the Nazis rose to power in Germany, Bossanyi emigrated to England taking these designs and panels with him as an example of his work. Bossanyi is perhaps best known for his work in stained glass, with windows in Canterbury and Washington Cathedrals, the New West End Synagogue and the Tate Gallery in London. He was also a versatile designer who worked in many media – sculpture, metalwork, ceramics – as well as being a prolific painter.
