Margaret Jane Smyth was the Matron of St Thomas's Hospital and Superintendent of the Nightingale Training School (1945–1955), President of the Nightingale Fellowship (1947–1955), Chair of the General Nursing Council (1955–1960), and President of the Royal College of Nursing (1960–1962). The award that she is wearing over her right breast is the Nightingale Nurses Badge. She was awarded an OBE in 1955 and a CBE in 1959. She is painted wearing her matron's uniform. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1957 (259).
