The panel depicts two minstrels playing the cymbals and a lute. They stand under a classical arch with a background of pomegranates and roses and decorated damask fabric. Made by William Morris (1834–1896), a well-known and well-loved artist, designer, writer and socialist activist associated with the British Arts & Crafts Movement. Morris, amongst many of his talents, was also a textile designer, poet, novelist, translator, activist and a stained glass artist. The panel was acquired by the museum in 2016 thanks to the generous bequest of Eila Grahame, an antiques dealer known for her sure eye and judgment as well as her unique shop in Kensington, with the support of the Art Fund.
