This painting depicts Michaelson House and its greenhouse. Thomas Michaelson of Cartmel bought Barrow Island shortly after his marriage to Jane Gibson in 1841; the mansion then became known as Michaelson House. In 1870 Barrow Island could still be described as 'a pleasant rural nook, with fields of waving grain and blooming hedgerows'. By 1882 the description had changed to 'the erstwhile pebbly strand is now covered with warehouses, workshops and business premises'.
