A small version of the famous figure today in the Museo Nazionale in Florence. The figure was so popular that numerous copies and versions were subsequently produced. Metallurgical analysis has indicated that this particular figure could well have been executed by one of Gimbologna’s assistants in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. The artist mast likely to have been responsible is Pietro Tacca, who entered the master’s service in 1592 (see also MY40 and MY41).
