An Art UK Art Detective discussion about a possible artist, begun in 2018, noted that ‘Mending the sails’ was a subject shown at the Liverpool autumn exhibition of 1883 by the local artist James Wilson Mackenzie (1865–1893), on whom much more information was then discovered but without convincing proof that he painted this. In 2021 a 1918 sale record for a ‘Mending the Sails’ by James Campbell Noble was produced and a comparison made of the present picture with another upright interior by him of about 1890, which suggested him as another possibility but the matter remains unresolved.
