Folding fan of a type commonly referred to as a ‘brisé’ (i.e., composed of tapering blades held together at the top edge by an interweaving cord or ribbon). The body of the fan is painted on one side with assorted game and exotic birds in the tradition of Northern European genre painters such as Hondecoiter (1636–1695) and Bloemaert (1566–1651). The opposite side is painted with a predominately monochrome landscape populated with miniature figures picked out in colour.
