plaque: THIS FOUNTAIN / WAS ERECTED IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF / JOSEPH DVFFY / MAYOR OF WALLSEND / 1909–1910 / BY HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS / 1848–1910; information board: The Duffy Memorial Fountain / Mr Joseph Duffy contributed to the local community when, in, 1884, he opened his brickworks near the Carville Schools and built a lot of / the area around Buddle Street. He once owned the Borough / Theatre in Wallsend. When the town officially became a borough in / 1901, he was elected to the new council. He became mayor in 1909 and died in office in 1910. // The Duffy Memorial Fountain was unveiled in 1912 as a result of a / competition held by Joseph Duffy's family to design a memorial to their / father. The monument designed by Simpson and Lawson, / the same prominent architects who designed the / impressive Ermerson / Chambers on Blackett / Street in Newcastle / upon Tyne. Emely and Sons built it.
