Three-quarter-length portrait providing a powerful but primitive likeness which suggests that the artist was self-taught. The sitter taken at three-quarter length faces the spectator while seated at an angle to her left.

There is a studied grimness about the woman, emphasised by the unrelieved gloom of her surroundings. All is blackness except for the trickle of Gold chain around the neck. That, however, is not sufficient to dispel a melancholy setting or soften an implacable character. What appears to have been a lace bonnet worn by the sitter has been painted out.
