Saint Emerentiana was the foster sister of Saint Agnes. She was a Roman virgin who was stoned to death while praying at the tomb of Saint Agnes because she had berated the idolaters for their violent attacks on Christians. One man is holding up a pagan statue and the other is holding a stone. Images of this saint are rare but there is a painting by Guercino in the Colonna collection in Rome. Guercino is believed to have painted another version for Cardinal Ludovisi. A drawing attributed to David Teniers also exists.
