A standing figure of Martha Lowther wearing a low cut dress with floral design and flounced sleeves, holding a pink rose in her right hand, painted in the artist's French style. The top right of the painting reads 'Martha, the wife of Henry Lowther Esq'. Henry Lowther was part of the East India Company and returned to England from Bombay (Mumbai) in 1738. Mercier came to London from York in 1757, so the painting is assumed to be after this date.
