Painted at Baynards Manor during the latter half of 1933 in preparation for Philpot's one-man show at the Leicester Galleries in February 1934, this is a portrait of a young Norwegian friend, Jan Erland, who also appeared in other paintings of this period. The portrait is carefully and rigidly posed: the gun was borrowed from the local station master. The work is painted in Philpot's newly broken style which gained him favour among progressive patrons.
