Created as part of a malangan ceremony in New Ireland, in the South Pacific, where sculptures represent a deceased person and their attributes, before being destroyed. Visiting Europeans often used this moment to purchase objects and take them away as souvenirs. As demand increased many sculptures were carved specifically to sell to Europeans.
