Sir Richard Hussey Vivian was the son of John Vivian of Truro, a vice-warden of the Stannaries, who derived his names from his great uncle Richard Hussey of Okehampton, MP for Mitchell. He was educated at Truro Grammar School under Dr Cornelius Cardew and then at preparatory school at Lostwithiel, Harrow and Exeter College, Oxford. In 1793, he obtained an ensign's commission only two days after his eighteenth birthday and within a year a captain's commission and was fighting in Flanders in the Duke of York's army. A distinguished military career in which he saw action in Spain, Ireland and France culminated in action under the Duke of Wellington as Colonel and Brigade Commander. In 1814 he was wounded by gunshot in the arm but, undaunted, by the following year had been knighted, promoted to Major General, given further command of a brigade of cavalry and was sent to join Wellington's army at Waterloo.
