The lunette contains the figures of a girl and a boy. The girl, in profile on the left, leans against the base of a pier while reading or writing on a scroll on her lap. The naked boy, thin and blindfolded, sits opposite her on a low stool, holding a set of scales weighted down with objects on its right side. In the background, spiky palm fronds, heavy with melancholic symbolism, fan out from the base of the column shaft to fill the centre background and cascade at his back.
