THIS MEMORIAL COMMEMORATES THE / LUNDHILL COLLIERY DISASTER OF / FEBRUARY 19th 1857. / 189 MEN AND BOYS LOST THEIR LIVES / WHEN FIRE ENGULFED THE MINE, / 18 SURVIVED AND 4 BODIES / WERE NEVER FOUND. / THIS SITE OVERLOOKS / THE FORMER COLLIERY; straps: In Memory of those that suffered loss LUNDHILL MINING DISASTER 1857 A WIDOWS ALLOWANCE WAS A SHILLING A WEEK 32 WIDOWS AND 180 ORPHANS WERE LEFT DESTITUTE COAL WAS MINED 640FT BELOW GROUND FLAMES ROSE 150FT INTO THE AIR 19 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 14 DIED THE KELLET FAMILY LOST SEVEN SONS THE INTENSE HEAT IGNITED THE COAL SEAM THE MINE WAS FLOODED TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES
