A memorial to the men who died in the disaster of 1857, the memorial was dedicated on the 150th anniversary. It shows a flat-bed mining truck set on rails and is surmounted by a large piece of 'coal' transected by a bronze/metal cross-section. Facts about the disaster and those lost are inscribed on banding fixed on difference faces of the dividing cross. Schoolchildren's drawing of miners are included on the strapwork.
