Lord Robert Baden-Powell, presented to Gilwell Park by the Mexican Scout Association on the occasion of the Mexican Olympics, 1968. In August 1907, 20 boys took part in an experimental camp which would lead to the creation of the world’s biggest youth movement. A professional soldier and national hero, Robert Baden-Powell had written a military manual called 'Aids to Scouting'. This became popular with schools and youth organisations. Robert was persuaded to rewrite his book, replacing the military aspects with bushcraft, survival skills and tales of adventurers. His vision was to teach young people life skills to enable them to be useful citizens and fulfil their potential. Although the methods have changed the ethos is as relevant today as it was in 1907.
