Although much of his life would have been taken up with his businesses in Britain, William Morris had a fondness for Australia. He undertook several trips around the globe during his lifetime, always by sea. This portrait of him awaiting departure at Liverpool catches Morris in pensive mood, perhaps considering what his forthcoming voyage might hold for him. By the time this was painted in 1958, he was already in his 80s and little involved in the daily routine of the motor industry.
