The city is dominated by the spire of St Columb's Cathedral, with the Walker Memorial Pillar (built 1828) on the city walls' Royal Bastion. The right edge of the painting can be seen the new Presbyterian Meeting House (foundation stone laid 27th April 1835). The building of this church in the suburb of Edenballymore reflected and facilitated the development of the city to the north of the seventeenth-century walled town. The Gasworks in Foyle Street (opened in 1829) are on the left of the painting, as is the old wooden bridge (opened in 1791).
