Austrian artist Rudolf Hradil specialised in printmaking. His early lithographs, displayed in Vienna in the late 1950s, so impressed the head of the British Council that he arranged a scholarship for Hradil to attend the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London from 1959–1960, where he learnt etching, specialising in drypoint. His other London etchings include: 'St Paul's Cathedral, Escalator' (1959) and 'Tower Bridge and Underground' (1960). His work fits into a long tradition of immigrant artists observing aspects of London, particularly the Thames.
