The artist was born in Antwerp and moved to England in 1708. In 1720 he visited Chirk and painted this scene of the town of Llangollen and the bridge over the River Dee. The panoramic view of the river valley is balanced compositionally by two conical-shaped hills to left and right. On top of the hill to the left the ruins of the thirteenth century hill fort Dinas Bran can be seen.
