Egg tempera paint, which is made by mixing dry coloured pigments with egg yolks, was the main painting technique before the introduction of oil paint in the 1500s. The paint is very quick drying, and because of that pictures in egg tempera are usually built up with lots of small brush strokes used in a hatched and crosshatched technique.
The artist Norman Hutchinson was born in Calcutta, India, and made his name as a painter of portraits, including some of the British Royal Family.
