A life-sized figure of a lifeboat man, standing on a roughly hewn base, inscribed with the names of the three Port Eynon lifeboat crew who drowned while attempting to rescue on the 1st of January 1916. The figure is said to be a portrait of the coxswain, Billy Gibbs, whose body was never recovered. The other lifeboatmen were William Eynon, second coxswain, and George Harry. Ten other lifeboatmen survived. The Port Eynon lifeboat 'Janet' capsized in a storm on New Year's Day 1916, with the loss of its coxswain and two crew. The disaster led to the closure of the village's lifeboat station.
