MacDowell joined the 16th Lancers in 1823 and served at the siege and capture of Bhurtpore in 1825–1826, and at the siege of Ghuznee in 1839 during the First Afghan War (1838–1842). He also served in the First Sikh War (1845–1846). From 1840 to 1847 he was senior major holding the brevet rank of lieutenant-colonel.
