Lieutenant Colonel George Hibbert spent his whole service in the 40th Regiment of Foot. He served with the Peninsular Army in 1814 in America and at Waterloo. He also served in Afghanistan. He died, much respected and regretted by the Regiment in which he had spent his life in 1847. The painting was originally in the possession of the 1st Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment.
