Victor Ellis lived at Leigh-on-Sea in Essex and his work largely concerned marine scenes. A senior member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, Ellis was noted for depictions of craft along the East Anglian coast and the Thames Estuary, in particular sailing vessels. This painting of a Leyland Mastiff truck is unusual in subject but typical of Ellis’ evocative style of landscape. Most probably commissioned by Leyland’s commercial vehicle division, it was a piece of corporately-owned artwork for use in the company’s headquarters.
