Folding fan, the leaf painted with characters representing some of the minor trades typically associated with the underclass in eighteenth-century Paris. The petits métier and cris de Paris – street hawkers, who used distinctive ‘cries’ to draw attention to their offers – peddled everything from foodstuffs to toy windmills and handheld fans. Among others depicted on the fan are a milkmaid, broom seller and knife grinder.
