Situated at the mouth of the river Seine, Le Havre was the seaport of Paris. Boudin, who described himself as a 'dreamer who prefers a little silence and solitude', never depicted the bustle of the quays but instead preferred panoramic views of the majestic sailing ships floating between shimmering water and a vast sky. His fellow artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot called Boudin the 'king of skies'.
