Watts painted Laura Russell (née de Peyronnet, 1836–1910) in 1872. In 1865 she had married Arthur Russell, MP for Tavistock 1857–1885, and from 1872 (the year in which his elder brother, Francis, became 9th Duke of Bedford) they were styled Lord and Lady Arthur Russell. Both were part of a circle including notable writers and artists of their day and the Watts portrait was shown as 'Lady Arthur Russell' at the RA in 1874. It was later inherited by the sitter's daughter Flora Russell (1869–1967) but is only now known from an early photograph of it in the Watts Gallery at Compton. This copy by Jane Hawkins may have been made for Tavistock to accompany portraits (both original and copies) that Laura herself painted and presented to decorate its new Town Hall, opened in 1864.
