A small Chinese woodcarving depicting the possibly mythical philosopher Lao Tse (also known as Lao Tzu, Laozi, Laotze and Lao Zi) seated astride a water buffalo with black, beaded eyes. His body is turned to his left side, leaning forward and smiling. The figure has an ornately carved base with holes carved along the edges.
