A countryside view, on the left of the picture is a stream banked by tall old trees. A large tree on the right bank leans over, forming the central focus. There is a small wooden bridge over the stream. In the foreground on the right, standing on the bank near the reeds, is a shepherd in a smock and wide-brimmed hat. He is talking to a companion in a red jacket who reclines on the grass. To the right of the figure a flock of sheep graze and rest. In the distance are fields, trees and other sheep and cattle. There appears to be a large town in the far distance.
