Landscape which opens up towards the right into a valley with classical ruins while on the right the forest is dense. The road in the foreground is occupied with travellers on horses. This painting captures the soft, golden light of the Roman Campagna rather than the cool light of northern Europe, though it was probably executed after Both had returned to Utrecht. The atmosphere and motifs are all typically Italian, the diversity of nature in one landscape ,combined with the road and ruins, is livened up by the travellers. The road creates depth by criss-crossing the canvas to the right, and the richest hues show the sunset at the pink horizon. This painting is undoubtedly a typical painting of Both, with his Italianate motifs. The travellers in Both’s landscape further enhance the sense of an expedition in the Italian countryside.
