Troyon was born at Sevres and was apprenticed as a painter in the porcelain factory. After moving to Paris he joined the Barbizon School. Troyon exhibited at the Salon from 1833 and received the Légion d'honneur in 1849. Following a visit to Holland in 1848 he included cattle and other animals in his landscapes, which proved highly successful with British collectors. His fresh oil sketches, painted out of doors, impressed Boudin and Monet.
