Gore's painting shows part of the rugged coastline between the town of Sóller and the village of Deya on the north-west coast of Majorca. He has captured the vibrant contrasts of the landscape by accentuating the colour of the vivid burnt orange earth against the blues of sea and sky and the silvery greens of the olive trees for which the area is known. This painting reflects Gore's admiration for the landscapes of the French Post-Impressionists and Fauves, and his interest in colour and light. Gore's father was the painter Spencer Frederick Gore (1878–1914), who shared a common interest in French Post-Impressionism.
