The memorial was originally situated at the main entrance to the Wellington Barracks, the regiment's headquarters. The date chosen for the unveiling was the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, a day which had seen the regiment suffer extreme losses and perform extraordinary acts of bravery. The regiment's 18 Victoria Crosses include the famous six won before breakfast at Gallipoli. The memorial remained at the main entrance to the barracks until 1961 when, following the reorganisation and relocation of the regiment, it was moved a short distance to the front of the new regimental headquarters and museum.
