A statue of Lady Rhondda – set upon a weathered steel base that resembles the prow of a ship, she looks like a proud and strong figurehead – this feature is in reference to her surviving the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. She was a leading suffragette and campaigned over 40 years for women to be able to sit in House of the Lords. A successful businesswoman, she is the only female to be President of the Institute of Directors. The circle of clasped hands behind Lady Rhondda represents women of today, recognises the efforts of women in the past who fought for equality and provides inspiration for the future.
