The original painting by Correggio of 'La notte' or 'Adoration of the Shepherds' is now in Dresden. The copy in Queen's by Cranke is very close to the original design but has been reduced in size by a factor of 2.4 and made square by extending the design on three sides. The artist, James Cranke the younger studied in Dresden and Antwerp where he made copies of the old masters. By 1773 he was in Warrington. He painted portraits and religious compositions after the Old Masters and exhibited portraits at the RA between 1775 and 1799.
