Marc Quinn's work explores ideas around the human form, mortality, beauty and science. Throughout his career he has used innovative materials including blood, wax and ice. However in Kiss, he uses the traditional medium of marble. Kiss was inspired by classical sculptures, many of which have lost limbs over time. In response, Quinn created a series of work questioning ideas of beauty and perfection. The models were actor Mat Fraser and art therapist Catherine Long, both of whom were born with missing or malformed limbs. 'People are seduced by the beauty of the sculpture and that makes them face something they normally avoid.' Marc Quinn.
