This bronze bust of / JAMES KEIR HARDIE / (1856 -1915) / was sculpted by Benno Schotz R.S.A / It was commissioned by the / National Keir Hardie Memorial Committee / and was accepted by / Provost Nan Hardie Hughes, / Kier Hardie’s daughter, in August 1939. / The plaque was unveiled by Mrs Anna Boyd, / Vice -Convener of Cumnock & Doon Valley District Council, / on 4th July 1992, / the Centenary of Kier Hardie’s election to parliament / as Britain’s first Labour M.P
