Although primarily known as a portraitist, in the mid-1980s Maggi Hambling turned to landscape painting. Her studies of dawn in the Orwell Estuary in her native Suffolk recall the incandescent visions of the nineteenth-century English masters J. M. W. Turner and John Constable. Hambling describes how inspiring she found such scenes: ‘The sunrise is for me the most exciting, and the most joyous and optimistic moment of the landscape’s day. It has the speed of violence, even the dark trees seem angry at what is happening. It’s enormously grand and silencing.’
