This painting is a portrait said to be of Judge Thomas Fell (1598/9–1658). Thomas inherited Swarthmoor Hall from his father and, in about 1634, he brought his new wife Margaret Askew to live there. Although Thomas Fell didn't become a Quaker he allowed his wife to support George Fox (1624–1691). Fox was an English Dissenter and a founder of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers.
