Joseph Henry Green was a Surgeon and Literary Executor of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834). Green was born in London, the nephew of another St Thomas’s surgeon Henry Cline. Green studied in Germany. He began to practise in 1816 and the same year was formally appointed demonstrator of Anatomy at St Thomas’ Hospital. He was elected Lecturer on Anatomy and Physiology jointly with Astley Cooper in 1818. In 1820 he was appointed Surgeon to St Thomas’ Hospital. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society and was appointed Professor of Anatomy at the Royal Academy, which he held until 1852. On the establishment of King's College in 1830, Green accepted the Chair of Surgery. Sometime around 1817 he became acquainted with the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Green became a follower of Coleridge and his philosophy.
