Jonathan Hatfield (1793–1840) belonged to a wealthy Manchester family of corn merchants. In 1825, he donated 13 now-lost plaster casts of sculptures (a number after Antonio Canova) to the Royal Manchester Institution, a precursor of Manchester Art Gallery. Hatfield quite probably visited Italy in the early 1820s, which is most likely when he sat for this bust (in Florence, where Bartolini was based).
