John Knox Witherspoon was a Presbyterian minister in Paisley who emigrated to New Jersey to become president of the College of New Jersey in Princeton and a member of the Continental Congress, the body established by the thirteen British colonies which declared independence in 1776. The statue is the twin of a piece installed at Princeton University, New Jersey, in November 2001. The artworks are intended to honour Witherspoon’s contributions in this country and in Scotland as a patriot, president and preacher and to commemorate the connections between the two communities through Witherspoon. Witherspoon is depicted middle-aged, preaching at lectern on which an open Bible rests. The shaft of the lectern is in the form of a bundle of rods inset with rising arrows bound by two horizontal tapes.
